Why Wales?
Wales is an ideal base for technology developers and researchers with its excellent wave resource, strong tidal currents, experienced supply chain, port facilities and grid connection.
Supply Chain
Wales has a strong existing supply chain built around well-established industries including oil and gas, refining, steel production and nuclear energy, all of which have the transferable skills and capabilities required to support the marine renewable industry. These capabilities include manufacturing, assembly, electrical, mechanical and marine civil engineering.
META is strategically located alongside the world-class facilities at Pembroke Port, recently redeveloped to support the emerging marine renewable industry.
Wales is also home to several other leading ports, well-positioned to support the roll-out of commercial marine renewable energy projects.
Welsh-based companies are already engaged in the marine energy sector, making significant contributions to Wales’ initial marine energy projects – providing surveys and consultancy services and fabrication and assembly services for wave and tidal stream developers.
Academia & Skills
With its extensive coastline, Wales provides a natural laboratory for studying marine energy technologies and is home to some of the top universities in the world.
META and Marine Energy Wales are proud to act as a bridge between industry and academia, inspiring passion for marine energy and helping to facilitate opportunities for research.
We are also committed to helping grow a skilled workforce in Wales and our close links with schools and colleges aim to help students develop an understanding of the industry and teach them about the role renewables will play in tackling climate change.
Government support
The Welsh Government’s ambition is for marine renewable energy to make an increasingly significant contribution to the overall energy mix over the next two decades and develop Wales as an exemplar for marine renewable energy technology. Their ‘Welsh National Marine Plan’ sets out a long-term vision for the sustainable development of Welsh waters.
Support for commercial deployment of offshore wind technologies, development and demonstration of wave energy and tidal energy technologies, and developing a better understanding of the potential for tidal lagoon power technology, are some of the key objectives outlined in the plan.
