PEMBROKE DOCK MARINE
A world class centre for the development of marine energy in Pembrokeshire

A collaborative project
The £60 million Pembroke Dock Marine project is designed to deliver the facilities, services and spaces needed to establish a world-class centre for marine energy and engineering in Pembrokeshire. Construction of a new 66-meter extended slipway, 6.5 hectares of new laydown space, new offices, workshops and workboat pontoons at Pembroke Port has now been completed.
The project builds upon Pembrokeshire’s existing experience and skills, and the new enhanced infrastructure and facilities will support developers on their journey through the design, test, build and deployment of their devices.
This £60 million development is funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal through the UK and Welsh Governments, the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government, and through private investment.
The project is made up of four pillars, helping to drive the commercialisation of marine energy technology and enhance the UK’s current industry proposition:
META
With eight pre-consented sites located in and around the Milford Haven Waterway, META aims to de-risk the development of marine energy projects by providing the opportunity to test devices, sub-assemblies and components.
The sites are accessible yet still representative of real sea environments, and are all close to the operational base of Pembroke Port, surrounded by enabling infrastructure and supply chain.
Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence (MEECE)
Delivered by the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult, MEECE provides specialist knowledge, experience and capability for the benefit of the marine energy industry.
MEECE brings the expertise and capabilities of Welsh universities, and of the ORE Catapult, into direct contact with technology developers and their supply chains, supporting more innovation, and capturing and embedding that innovation in Wales.
Pembroke Dock Infrastructure Upgrades
The Port of Milford Haven has redeveloped the operational space at Pembroke Port to increase efficiencies and reduce device development costs.
A large open plan fabrication and laydown area has been created as well as land to sea transition space suited to the needs of modern industry.
Pembrokeshire Demonstration Zone
Managed by Celtic Sea Power, the Demonstration Zone is a 90km2 leased site for commercial deployment of 100MW capacity of full-scale wave and floating wind arrays.
It is the largest seabed agreement for wave energy in the world and ensures developers have access to a logical stepping stone designed to prove commercial viability.
Pembroke Dock Marine is one of a number of transformational projects in South West Wales part-funded by the Swansea Bay City Deal, which covers Pembrokeshire, Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.
A £1.3 billion investment programme, the Swansea Bay City Deal is expected to boost the regional economy by £1.8 billion and create over 9,000 high-quality jobs in coming years. Visit the City Deal website for more information.
