technology tested:

This deployment tested low-carbon and traditional concrete samples in an intertidal marine environment. The low-carbon samples consisted of recycled materials and industrial byproducts for the aggregate and cementitious material.

Samples included integrated humidity, strength, and temperature sensors to specifically monitor early hydration.

A weather station and CTD probes were also used to measure the environmental conditions during the experiment.

sites used:

Quay 1provides slipway access to an intertidal area well suited for this sort of testing.

duration of deployment:

Eight months from May 2023 to December 2023.

test aims:

This deployment aimed to investigate the performance of the samples in an intertidal marine environment and explore the feasibility of low-carbon concrete use in tidal lagoon schemes.

test outcome:

This deployment provided valuable real-time information on what happens to the concrete while exposed to this environment. This is not entirely possible to do in laboratory conditions, due to size of the specimens and capability of instruments.
