Exo Engineering & Marine Energy Engineering Centre of Excellence

technology tested:

This deployment tested eco-engineered scour protection systems also known as “Exo-Reefs”. Scour protection is a layer of material installed around seabed infrastructure to prevent seabed erosion. The Exo Engineering systems aim to promote the habitat function of scour protection and enhance biodiversity, whilst not compromising on engineering requirements.

sites used:

East Pickard Bayan energetic wave energy site and FLOW component test site.

duration of deployment:

18 months, from September 2023 to March 2025.

test aims:

To investigate the performance of the Exo-engineering systems as scour protection and as a habitat for marine life.

test outcomes:

This research project is ongoing therefore the outcomes have not yet been determined. However, this project highlights how META’s pre-consented test sites can be used for a wide variety of testing activities – not just energy convertors, but innovative components designed for the offshore renewables sector as well.
