site user(s):

Dolphyn Hydrogen and Altrad Babcock

technology tested:

This pioneering deployment tested an electrolyser coupled with the following systems on a barge:

  • Sea water lift pump
  • Sea water desalination, water cleaning / polishing
  • All powered by a (HVO) diesel generator.

sites used:

Criterion Jetty –  the deepest of our quayside sites, offering slightly higher exposure to tidal currents and waves

duration of deployment:

A two month deployment between June and July 2024.

test aims:

The deployment’s aim was to produce hydrogen from sea water in a floating offshore marine environment and test key elements of the hydrogen production system.

test outcomes:

This deployment marked the first time hydrogen has been successfully produced from seawater in a floating environment in the UK and an important step forward in enabling the UK to produce low-carbon hydrogen safely, reliably and at scale.

Learnings from this trial will feed into the development of the Dolphyn Hydrogen full scale demonstrator.
