ERM successfully completed offshore trials to test key components of its innovative Dolphyn Hydrogen process this summer at META’s Criterion Jetty site in Pembroke Dock – it’s thought to be the first time hydrogen has been produced from seawater in a marine environment in the UK.
The trials are the culmination of six years of development, and represent an important step forward in enabling the UK to produce low-carbon hydrogen safely, reliably and at scale.
Six years ago, ERM had a vision to produce affordable low -carbon hydrogen from floating wind at a scale that would help accelerate the transition to a net zero economy. We are excited to see this vision translate into reality with the UK’s first offshore hydrogen production trials. We look forward to building on this momentum to help drive progress towards a low-carbon future.
Tom Reichert, Group CEO at ERM
Having validated the key components at META, Dolphyn Hydrogen now plan to integrate electrolysis, desalination and hydrogen production on a floating offshore wind platform. Hydrogen will be transported to shore via pipeline, where it can be used directly for power generation, transport, industrial purposes and heating. It does not require an electrical connection and provides a pathway to low-carbon energy generation without associated grid constraints or consumption of energy from other renewable sources.
Criterion Jetty is the deepest of our quayside sites and offers slightly higher exposure to tidal currents and waves, making it possible to conduct these important trials in a floating marine environment.
We were delighted to support ERM and the Dolphyn Hydrogen team with these crucial trials and highlight our commitment to innovation and strengthening Wales’ position as a leader in the transition to Net Zero.
Saul Young, Operations Manager at META
The development of the Dolphyn Hydrogen process has been supported by the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, through the Low Carbon Hydrogen Supply 2 Competition in the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP). It has been awarded funding of over £8 million to date and has also been championed by devolved Governments in Wales and Scotland.
