Site user(s):

Swansea University, Prof. Ian Masters, & SELKIE Project

technology tested:

This deployment tested a Convergence Beam Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (C-ADCP) – a device designed to capture more accurate measurements than a diverging ADCP. The device featured a towed raft for installation and an automated recovery system, so it can be deployed and recovered using low cost vessels.

Initially, the C-ADCP was tested at 1/4 scale at Criterion Jetty, before being deployed at full scale (10m) at Warrior Way.

sites used:

Criterion Jettythis site provides the most depth / tidal resource of all our META Quayside sites, as well as slipway access.

Warrior Way.tidal stream site suitable for micro and scale devices.

duration of deployment:

  • ¼ scale deployment, one month (May – June 2021).
  • Full Scale deployment, three months (Nov 21 – Feb 22).

test aims:

The aim of this deployment was to test and validate the novel deployment and retrieval method, the data collection system and to collect accurate measurements of flow characteristics at the site to inform future tidal turbine deployments.

test outcome:

Successful data acquisition & methodology refinements.
